‘Writing Joyce’ is a very thinking Joyce, painting of just his head and neck based on the statue in The Merrion Hotel Dublin. In the courtyard of the hotel there is a sun dial with a six foot Joyce with cane. Joyce himself as the gnomon ('one that knows or examines' in Greek), or pointer. The James Joyce Sundial at the Merrion Hotel, as the sun moves around, Joyce's shadow falls on a series of quotations from Ulysses, showing us what Bloom is up to throughout the day.
